We are excited to announce the latest update to the MLSP Simple Theme to version 2.0. This update contains many new enhancements, improvements and security updates to help you accomplish what you want in a blog as easily as possible. We're going to go over the new features below so you can being to implement them today!
New Features & Enhancements
The Home Featured Widget Areas
In version 1.0, we introduced the Home Featured Widget areas. These were 3 widget areas (sidebars) that could be used to place widgets at the top of the home page. Many people were using these to present offers and other links. Prior to this update, you needed to have a widget in each of these areas in order for the layout to look right. In version 2.0, you can utilize 1, 2, or all of these sidebars to acheive different layouts. If you choose to use one, it will take up the full width of the page. If you choose to use 2, they will both split the area half and half, and if you choose to use all three, the area will be split up in to thirds.
For example, we had many people asking how they can easily add a video and a call-to-action or form to the top of their homepage. Now, it's as easy as dragging a video widget to Home Featured 1, and a call to action or form widget to Home Featured 2. Below are the settings for the MLSP Simple demo site, as well as the outcome:
Note that the form above was created with WP Optin Studio, which now comes with a new design setting that allows you to use the Genesis Theme design settings, rather than the plugin settings. This is easily changeable by just checking the ‘Use Genesis Theme Styles' button when editing your form!
New Customizer Design Settings
Along with these new settings comes the ability to completely design this new Home Featured Widget area, as well as control over where your main navigation shows up. If you visit the customizer, and click on Theme Settings, you will now see some options to have better control over your sites design. You can control the background of the home featured widget area with either a background color, a gradient, or a background image. (Note that if you choose to upload an image, it will override any background color settings you have made) You can also choose to change the overall text color of this area (helpful if you choose to use a dark background color or image!)
- Featured Background Color 1: Choose a background color for your Home Featured Widget area
- Featured Background Color 2: If you would like to use a gradient for the background, choose a second color here
- Featured Widget Background Image: Use this setting to upload an image to use as the background of this area
- Tile the Background Image: If you are uploading a texture or an image you want repeated, turn this on. If you are uploading a specific image that you want to be used full sized, just leave this off
- Featured Widget Text Color: This will change the default text color of the home featured widget area. Note that some widgets may override this setting in their individual widget settings
- Select Primary Navigation Position: You can choose to place your primary navigation above or below the header
Add a Call to Action Button to Your Primary Navigation
You can now add a call to action button to your primary navigation by simply adding the css class of ‘button' to the menu item. To do this, simply add a menu item to the END of your primary navigation and add the css class. The theme will take care of the rest! (If you do not see the ‘css class' option, click on the Screen Options tab in the top right and make sure that setting is activated)
New Paragraph Callout Styles (Advanced)
We have added a few styles to allow you to make some ‘callout' paragraphs. This is a bit advanced as it takes a little bit of html. You basically just need to wrap your sentence with a ‘p' tag and some classes (or you can just copy/paste what we have below in your WordPress' TEXT editor (not visual editor)
<p class="message green">INSERT YOUR SENTANCE</p>
<p class="message orange">INSERT YOUR SENTANCE</p>
<p class="message red">INSERT YOUR SENTANCE</p>
The ‘COLOR' Setting
Prior to this update, you could change the link color for your blog under the Customizer -> Colors settings. This color setting now effects most of the colors on your blog to allow you to brand your site much easier. This will now effect buttons, hover colors, links and much more. If you previously had this setting set to a color of your choice, these changes will have already taken place. If not, feel free to set your own color today!
Overall Design, Styles and Fonts
Version 2.0 has been cleaned up and ‘re-designed' from the ground up. This version goes after a much more clean, open and modern look than it's predecessor and you can see these changes throughout the theme.
We hope you enjoy these new options and settings within version 2.0 of the MLSP Simple theme!
